JHS and MSSU Partnership
Students in the Department of Teacher Education at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) participate in several clinical field experience activities at Joplin High School. Beginning at the sophomore level, students in the Foundations of Education in a Global Society class participate in a 32 clock hour observation experience in the area of “Diversity” at Joplin High School. During their junior year, students participate in two clinical field experiences at Joplin High School.
In the class Content Area Literacy at the Secondary Level, students participate in four Professional Learning Communities meetings. MSSU student select either morning or after school meetings ranging from department meetings, all faculty meeting, or specific topic meetings (Writing Across the Curriculum). Also during the Junior Year, secondary students have the opportunity to spend their 32 clock hour Junior Internship at JHS. During this experience, MSSU students spend time tutoring students, working with small groups, and teaching two lessons.
As a capstone to the Teacher Education program at MSSU, senior students have an opportunity to spend their student teaching experience at JHS. Beginning with the 2007 semester, this experience will grow to a full semester experience for students.
