Installation Ceremony Held for JMG Career Association
Forty-one students spoke the vows of membership at a recent installation ceremony for the National Career Association – a student-led organization integrated into the Jobs for Missouri's Graduates (JMG) program.
JMG is now in its fifth year at Joplin High School and has seen much success. Based on the nationally-known Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) model, the program aims to keep young people in school and to provide them with work-based learning experiences.
Through the support of school and business partnerships, JMG helps Joplin juniors and seniors stay on track for graduation and establish a career path through continuing education or the military. Vallie Cook, Joplin High School's JMG Specialist, states that her 2009 seniors achieved an 82% graduation rate and a 92.86% total positive outcome rate for continuing education, civilian job placements and military service.
Held on October 22, 2009, the installation ceremony opened with the Joplin High School ROTC Color Guard. JHS Principal and Missouri Principal of The Year Dr. Kerry Sachetta gave opening comments, followed by JMG Principal Keith White. JMG State Coordinator Pat Thompson swore in the new members and the newly-elected president, Shirleyn Reyes.
Keynote speaker for the event was International Belsnickle Artist Linda Lindquist-Baldwin who delivered her personal testimony. She discussed overcoming obstacles and reaching success through a strong work ethic, perseverance and following your dream. Student Lacy Elliott later remarked, “She is now my hero.”
The students were honored by many other special guests including Harlin Flippin, JMG Program Manager; Assistant Superintendent Dr. Angie Besendorfer; Cary Beasley, Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Workforce Development Manager; the JMG Advisory Board; members of the JHS Guidance Department; building principals; and family members. Gratitude is expressed to Mazzio’s, Rangeline Domino’s, Dillion’s and 15th Street Wal-Mart for their assistance in the celebration.
