Scholarships are awards of money that do not have to be repaid. Typically, scholarships are awarded based on students’ academic achievements, leadership, community service, financial need, and/or written/oral communication.
ATTENTION, SENIORS: Be sure to check with the financial aid offices at colleges of interest for information on academic, departmental, and other scholarships specific to each school. It is the responsibility of each student to request and complete any available scholarship applications.

1. MSSU A+ Leadership Scholarship
Criteria: A+ certification; first-time freshman admitted to MSSU; U.S. citizen; must complete FAFSA.
Amount: $1,000 per academic year ($500 per semester for maximum of 8 semesters).

2. Bright Flight Scholarship
Criteria: Senior; ACT composite of 31 or higher. This is the state’s merit-based scholarship administered by the Missouri Department of Higher Education (MDHE). For more information go to www.dhe.mo.gov.

3. Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Program
Criteria: Senior with financial need who has exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Minimum GPA of 2.0, with involvement in co-curricular and community service activities. Commitment to pursue a bachelor’s degree; must have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. 4. Horatio Alger Missouri Scholarship Program
Criteria: Senior with critical financial need who has exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. 5. Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go! College Scholarship
Criteria: Senior; essay competition. Essay Question: Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Delivers an important message about the chances and troubles that life presents. Thinking about the book Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, what kinds of opportunities and challenges do you think your education will present in the future? Entries must be submitted in personal essay/memoir format. All submissions must be typed, double-spaced, and no longer than one page (500 words).

6. College of Business Scholarships – University of Missouri, Columbia
Criteria: Seniors. The College of Business awards over 700 scholarships to incoming and returning students. The three largest are the Sam W. Walton Scholarship in Retail, the Robert T. Trulaske, Sr. Scholarship in Business, and the Ponder Minority Scholarship. The selection criteria for the Sam M. Walton and Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. Scholarships can be found on the applications, while the Ponder Minority Scholarship recipients are selected based solely on the information provided by the student on the application. In addition to the scholarship application, the applicant must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

7. Hoover-Koken Grant
Criteria: Seniors who demonstrate financial need. A copy of the parent’s 2009 income tax return must be submitted along with the application.

8. Program: Tomorrow’s Leaders Today
Youth leadership program sponsored by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. TLT provides an opportunity to learn more about the area and the importance of community service. TLT brings students together with business and community leaders to identify and discuss community issues, leadership, and career opportunities; five sessions.
Criteria: Senior; outstanding academically, effective leader in community and/or school activities with an interest in furthering his/her knowledge of the Joplin region.
Deadline: September 11, 2009 (Return application to the guidance office by 3:00 p.m.)
Interviews will be held at JHS on the morning of Sept. 29, 2009.
9. Danforth Scholars Program (Washington Univ., St. Louis, MO)
Criteria: Senior with outstanding academic performance and exceptional commitment to community service, leadership and personal achievements that set the student apart from his or her peers. An individual who has substantive knowledge of the student’s dedication to community and academic life must nominate the student. When a student has been nominated, the nomination committee will notify the student and provide application materials, which must be returned by January 15, 2010. The nominator must submit the appropriate form with a letter of nomination by October 15, 2009. SEE YOUR COUNSELOR.

10.Bryan and Davidson Scholarships – Davidson College, Davidson, NC
Criteria: Senior. Two Bryan Scholars, one male and one female, are chosen for each incoming class. Students must be nominated to apply. SEE YOUR COUNSELOR.
Amount: $2,000.00 to $30,000.00

11. ANYCOLLEGE.COM SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Random student scholarship given away four times per year. There is no fee to sign up for this random scholarship drawing. Students can sign up by going to www.anycollege.com and clicking on the “Win a Scholarship” link.
Amount: $1,500.00

12. Chancellor’s Scholarship -
Missouri University of Science & Technology Rolla, MO
Criteria: Senior in upper 10% of graduating class, ACT of 30 or SAT CR+M of 1410 or better (on or before the October 2009 exam), and strong leadership skills through community service activities.
Amount: $12,000.00 renewable

13. Senior Scholarship Showcase 2010
Criteria: Senior vocalists or instrumentalists. Applicants will return to the Fine Arts in the Four States a recording (tape or CD) of two songs and the outline of a tentative 30-45 minute program. Six finalists will be selected to perform before a panel of judges in November 2009.

14. Call Me MISTER Program
Criteria: Senior interested in attending Clemson University or four historically black colleges in South Carolina: Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College and South Carolina State University. The scholarship is an effort to address the critical shortage of African American male teachers among South Carolina’s lowest performing public schools.

15. Community Foundation of the OZARKS
Criteria: Senior. The CFO manages 200 scholarships for Southwest Missouri. Some eligibility is by “Residency” – the city where you live, and/or the high school you attend; other scholarships are available to all students living in Southwest Missouri. 16. Elks National Foundation 2010 Most Valuable Student Scholarship
Criteria: Senior excelling in scholarship and leadership, having financial need. Contest details and applications are available on line at www.elks.org/enf/scholars. Completed applications should be returned to the Joplin Elks Lodge, 1802 W. 26th Street, Joplin, MO 64804.
Amount: Varies. The Elks National Foundation awards $2,296,000 in college scholarships to a total of 500 high school seniors nationwide.

17. 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Award
Criteria: Recognizes students in grades 5-12 for volunteering service in their communities. Complete an online application and submit it to Dr. Sachetta by November 2, 2009. Application can be found at http://spirit.prudential.com/ or www.principals.org/prudential (access key: spirit). A committee of Joplin High School teachers will review all applications submitted and select two Local Honorees and up to four runners-up. The top high school volunteer in each state is named State Honoree in February, and two to ten runners-up in each state are named Distinguished Finalists. Ten of the State Honorees are named America’s top youth volunteers of the year at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in May.
Amount: State Honorees receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. National Honorees receive additional $5,000 awards, engraved gold medallions, and crystal trophies for their schools. They also receive $5,000 grants for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

18. Multicultural Leadership Scholarship -- Missouri State University, Springfield, MO
Criteria: Senior who ranks in the upper one-half of his/her class and is admitted to the university. Applicants must have demonstrated leadership in multicultural, school, and community activities. Scholarship is renewable for up to four additional years beyond the freshman year. Application is available online at: www.missouristate.edu/multiculturalapp.
Amount: In-state student fees up to 18 hours per semester for the academic year.

19. Presidential Scholarship -- Missouri State University, Springfield, MO
Criteria: Senior, 30 or higher on the ACT or 1340 or higher on the math and critical reading portions of the SAT in a test taken prior to January 15, 2010; rank in the top ten percent of the class or have a 3.90 or higher cumulative GPA after the 6th or 7th semester of high school; attend a scholarship interview at MSU on Saturday, February 27, 2010; be admitted to the university. 20. Leadership Scholarship – Missouri State University, Springfield, MO
Criteria: Seniors planning to attend MSU in the fall of 2010. Scholarship selection is based on academic achievement and ACT/SAT scores. Joplin High School may nominate five seniors for this scholarship. Students interested in being nominated should turn in a MSU Leadership Scholarship Nomination form to their counselors.

21. Eagle Picher Scholarship Program
Criteria: Senior with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale planning to enroll full-time in an accredited two or four year college, university, or vocational-technical school.

22. CONTEST: American Legion 76th Annual Oratorical Scholarship Program
Criteria: Students under the age of 20 and enrolled in grades 9 through 12 may enter the competition. Interested students should see Mr. Vogt, Room CC105, who will sponsor the oratorical contest for Joplin High School, in conjunction with our local American Legion Post. Each contestant will deliver a prepared oration, which must be an original effort. The oration must address some aspect of the Constitution of the United States, which emphasizes the attendant duties and obligations of a citizen to our government. A representative will be chosen from the high school competition to represent our school at county, district, zone and state finals.
Amount: State Winners range from $1,400.00 to $2,000.00; National Winners range from $14,000.00 to $18,000.00

23. Wendy’s High School Heisman Award
Criteria: Senior men and women, a minimum of a “B” grade average and participation in at least one of the 27 sports officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High Schools. Interested students should apply at www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com. Applicants should apply early because each online application must be reviewed and confirmed by a JHS representative. School Winners (one man and one female) will be announced in mid-October. State Finalists will be announced in late October, with State Winners determined in mid-November.

24. CONTEST: Profiles In Courage
Criteria: Open to students in grades 9 through 12. Applicants will submit an essay of less than 1,000 words that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Essays may be submitted online or by mail. Applicants must complete and submit a registration form online for themselves and also provide school information, including a nominating teacher, on the registration form. To navigate the John F. Kennedy website and find the contest information go to www.jfklibrary.org. Under “Education and Public Programs,” click on “For Students.” In the left-hand column, click on “Essay Contest for High School Students.”

25. The American Legion 2010 Scholarship Programs
Criteria: Students under the age of 21 and a resident of Missouri who are unmarried and a descendant of a veteran with at least 90 days active service in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard, who received an Honorable Discharge for such service.
Several scholarships are available. Any additional requirements for each scholarship are on the reverse side of the application. Copies of the scholarships may be obtained on the web at www.missourilegion.org.

26. Voice of Democracy Patriotic Audio Essay Competition
Criteria: Grades 9-12. Record an original 3-5 minute essay on a cassette tape or CD on the theme “Does America Still Have Heroes?” Label the cassette or CD and neatly typed essay with your name and complete an entry form. Turn in these three items to the guidance office. On October 30, 2009, a representative of the VFW will pick up all entries for judging by the local VFW Post.

27. National Co-op Scholarship Program
Criteria: Senior planning to enroll at one of eight NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities; cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better; complete the National Co-op Scholarship Program application including a typed one-page essay describing why you have chosen to pursue a college cooperative education program. See your counselor for a list of the eight NCCE Partner Colleges & Universities. On-line applications are available at www.co-op.edu.
Amount: 170 merit co-op scholarships totaling $4,200,000.

28. Boston University 35th Annual Trustee Scholarship Competition

29. 2010 Whole Person Scholarship Competition –
Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK
Criteria: Senior with 3.0 cumulative GPA, plus 21 or higher ACT composite or 1000 SAT (math and critical reading only). Teacher nomination is required, as well as acceptance into ORU, to participate in this on-campus Scholarship Day Competition.
Amount: Full-tuition scholarship

30. John T. Belcher Memorial Scholarship
Criteria: Senior. Applicants will write a 500-word essay on the following topic: “How can public education be improved through research, resources and responsibility.” Applicants will submit the essay, two letters of recommendation from teachers, and a copy of their high school transcript along with the application to Dr. Sachetta. Dr. Sachetta will submit all applications to the School Board. The Joplin R-VIII School Board will select one application from those submitted to forward to the MSBA Regional Leadership Committee for this region. Selection will be based on academic achievement, need, leadership abilities and the quality of the essay related to public education. One regional winner will advance to statewide competition.
Amount: The statewide winner receives a $1,500.00 scholarship and the other 16 regional winners each receive a $750.00 scholarship.
Deadline: Turn into Dr. Sachetta by November 23, 2009.
31. Anthem Essay Contest and The Fountainhead Essay Contest
Criteria: Entrant in the Anthem Essay Contest must be enrolled in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grade; entrant in The Fountainhead Essay Contest must be enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade. Entrant will select from one of three topics and develop a unified essay. A complete list of rules and guidelines and how to submit the essay can be found at www.aynrandeducation.com.

32. Army ROTC Scholarships
Criteria: Senior interested in the Army ROTC program in college. The Army ROTC scholarships are national merit-based scholarships that pay full tuition, fees, books and a monthly stipend. Students must attend an accredited college or university with a Senior ROTC program. Upon graduation, students are commissioned as officers in the US Army and will serve in the National Guard, Army Reserves or on Active Duty. Students may apply online at www.goarmy.com/rotc. 33. Gates Millennium Scholars Program
Criteria: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American seniors who are citizens, national or legal permanent residents; cumulative GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale; demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities; meet federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria; have completed and submitted all three required forms (Nominee Personal Information Form, Nominator Form, and Recommender Form). 34. KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program
Criteria: Senior planning to enroll in a public college or university within their state of legal residence; U.S. citizen or permanent resident; earn a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75; demonstrate financial need. Online scholars applications are available at www.kfcscholars.org from December 1, 2009 through February 10, 2010.

35. US Bank’s Internet Scholarship Program
Criteria: Seniors planning to enroll at an eligible 4-year college or university participating in the US Bank No Fee Education Loan Program are eligible to apply. Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random drawing process. Further details, including college or university eligibility, can be found at www.usbank.com/studentloans. Scholarship online applications will be accepted from October 2009 through March 2010.

36. United States JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship Program
Criteria: Seniors planning to attend an accredited post-secondary college, university, or vocational school. The Missouri JCI Senate will choose two nominees to represent Missouri for the JCI Senate Foundation scholarships. Each of these two nominees will receive a $250 scholarship from the Missouri JCI Senate. Applicants must submit a personal statement of up to 300 words, and may include up to five (5) letters of references from educators, clergy, employers, and/or community leaders. 37. Marist College NSF (National Science Foundation) Scholarship,
Poughkeepsie, NY
Criteria: Academically talented seniors who wish to major in Computer Science or Information Technology and Systems. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, submit an essay describing why he/she would be a good candidate for this program and for Marist College, and interview with the dean and/or faculty from the School of Computer Science and Mathematics.

38. National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship Program

39. AXA Achievement Scholarship
Criteria: Seniors who demonstrate ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family and community, and ability to succeed in college. Amount: $10,000 national scholarships to 52 students (one per state) and $15,000 additional one-time scholarships to 10 national recipients. These top ten also receive an offer of an internship with AXA.

40. John Dennis Scholarship for Criminal Justice
Criteria: Senior who intends to pursue a criminal justice career and will be attending a Missouri college or university. Applicants must have a 2.0 or greater GPA, demonstrate financial need, participate in extra-curricular activities and have a good reference from their counselor.

41. Arkansas Alumni Association Scholarship,
University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR
Criteria: Seniors with a 3.60 GPA and an ACT composite of at least 24 or SAT composite of at least 1090. Students receiving the UA Prestigious Fellowships and Chancellor’s Scholarships will not be considered for Arkansas Alumni Association Scholarships. 42. Contest: Missouri Journalism and Missouri Poster Contest,
sponsored by the Governor’s Council on Disability (Grades 7 through 12)
Criteria: Both contests are open to students with or without disabilities. Prizes are awarded in two categories for each contest: grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. Students entering the Missouri Journalism Contest will submit a typewritten double spaced essay not to exceed three pages describing how their community (schools, towns, or both) has been changed by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Use the theme “The Americans with Disabilities Act; Celebrating 20 Years of Opportunity.” Students entering the Missouri Poster Contest will design a poster displaying how the ADA has increased access in their community (schools, towns, or both). Please include the theme “The Americans with Disabilities Act; Celebrating 20 Years of Opportunity.” Students should show how their community can be a more welcoming place for people with disabilities. Amount: Monetary and other prizes will be awarded in both the 7-9 and 10-12 divisions. Additional prize drawings will be held for contest participants.

43. Mizzou Alumni Association Scholarship – University of Missouri-Columbia
Criteria: Senior; upper 20% of class or have an ACT score of 26 or higher; achieve a minimum GPA of 2.75 for at least 12 hours credit for the fall semester to receive a second semester award. The applicant must have been accepted to Mizzou to apply for this scholarship because his/her Mizzou student number is required on the application. 44. SOPHOMORE SEMINAR: Missouri Leadership Seminar
Criteria: One sophomore from Joplin High School will be selected to participate in the Missouri Leadership Seminar to be held at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO on June 4th to June 6th, 2010. The goal of the leadership seminar is to cultivate leadership qualities. Interested sophomores should submit a 500-word essay to his/her counselor on the topic “What Leadership Means To Me,” along with a resume, by Friday, February 12, 2010.

45. Department of Natural Resources Environmental Educational Scholarship Program
Criteria: Senior and Missouri resident with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, planning to enroll as a full-time student in a Missouri post-secondary institution. Qualified candidates must be pursuing a degree in one of the following areas of study: Civil, chemical, mechanical, agricultural engineering or environmental engineering; or environmental areas such as geology, biology, wildlife management, planning, some aspect of natural resource management or a closely related field; or environmental chemistry; or environmental law enforcement. Application process requires three letters of recommendation and a one-page essay explaining why this scholarship is desired. 46. CONTEST: Create-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship Contest
Criteria: High school, college and university students enrolled any time during 2009 in an academic program designed to conclude with the awarding of a diploma or a degree. Employees of sponsor, Prudent Publishing Company, Inc., their family members, and persons living in the same household as employees or their family members are not eligible. Greeting card entries will be judged on overall aesthetic appeal, creativity and originality, appropriateness for use as a greeting card, etc. Detailed information about the contest and registration is available at www.gallerycollection.com/scholarship. Look for the scholarship page on the site and complete the online application. The online application must include an original work of art or photograph. The contest is limited to one entry per person.

47. LEAP Scholarship Program (Lead and Enhance the Accounting Profession)
Criteria: Seniors who are planning to pursue an accounting degree at a Missouri college or university. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, test scores, leadership potential, and educator recommendation. Applicant must be a student member of the Missouri Society of CPAs. Any high school senior who signs up for FREE MSCPA high school student membership before January 29, 2010 will be sent the scholarship link by email. 48. Kansas City Associated Equipment Distributors Scholarship
Criteria: Senior with a cumulative gpa of 2.5 planning to pursue a degree in applied science or a certificate in either Diesel Mechanics or Heavy Equipment Repair in the fall of 2010. See your counselor for additional information about eligible post-secondary programs.

49. Contest: Letters About Literature Writing Competition
Criteria: Students in grades 4-12. Letters About Literature is a national reading promotion program of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, presented in partnership with Target. Students will write a personal letter to an author explaining how his or her work affected them. The competition has three levels: Entries for Level 1 should be no less than 100 words and no more than 400 words; Entries for Level 2 no less than 300 words and no more than 600 words; Entries for Level 3 no less than 500 words and no more than 800 words. 52. KIDS’ CHANCE Scholarship Program for Children of Missouri’s Seriously Injured Workers
Criteria: Senior who has a parent that sustained a serious injury or a fatality in a Missouri work related accident covered by workers’ compensation. The parent’s injury or death must be compensable under Missouri Workers’ Compensation Law, Chapter 287 RSMo. Student must demonstrate financial need. Scholarship may cover tuition, books, supplies, housing, meals and other expenses not covered by other grants and/or scholarships.

53. Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship
Criteria: Senior in the top 10 percentile on the ACT. (NOTE: Last year’s recipients had ACT scores no lower than 32.) Applicants must submit a 7th semester transcript and verification of ACT score. Each scholarship recipient will receive a form that must be filed with the institution he/she intends to attend, certifying that he/she is registered with the selective service or that he/she is not required to be registered.

55. The Balanced Man Scholarship – University of Arkansas
Criteria: Senior planning to attend the University of Arkansas. This is a cash award sponsored by the Arkansas Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity to outstanding freshman male students who embody the principles of a Balanced Man. The fraternity’s aim is to recognize and reward men who strive to achieve balance and all-round excellence because this is essential in achieving a satisfying college experience and life. 57. Minority Teaching Scholarship
Criteria: Senior who is African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, or Native American and ranks in the top 25% of his/her class with a score in the top 25 national percentile on the ACT or SAT examination. Applicant must also enroll full-time in an approved teacher education program at a participating Missouri school with a scholarship match. This scholarship is a loan/loan forgiveness program designed to attract academically talented minority individuals into the teaching profession. For students who meet all of the program’s obligations, the loans are forgiven through conversion to a scholarship (gift aid). The application process includes a 250-word essay, resume, and three references. Awards are based on academic performance, quantity and quality of school and community activities, range and interest of activities, employment experience, leadership abilities, interpersonal skills, and the desire to enter the education field. 58. MSPE – SW Educational Foundation Scholarship Program
Criteria: Senior with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale for the 10th and 11th grades. Applicant must have a minimum score on the ACT test of 29 in Math and 25 in English and must enroll in an engineering program that has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET-EAC) at one of the approved state institutions or a Pre-Engineering Program at a Missouri College or University that has a working agreement to transfer credits with one of the approved schools.

62. Missouri Bankers Foundation Scholarship

63. Farm Kids for College Scholarship
Criteria: Senior planning to major in an agricultural field at an accredited college or university. Students will submit an 850- to 1200-word essay on the following topic: “How can marketing production with other farmers and ranchers improve prices for grain, dairy and livestock? How can niche marketing, risk management and price negotiation impact prices producers receive?” Two letters of reference are also required.

64. DeLisle Golf Scholarship
Criteria: Senior male or female golf athlete. Preference may be given to students attending the University of Missouri-Columbia or Missouri Southern State University. Douglas DeLisle created the DeLisle Golf Scholarship in memory of his father, Len DeLisle. Len DeLisle and his wife Opal opened the first Social Security office in Joplin. Douglas DeLisle participated in the Junior Horton Smith golf program and played for the Joplin High School team. He has continued his interest in golf as a volunteer for PGA, Sr. PGA, and LPGA tournaments in Florida.

65. Missouri Insurance Education Foundation Scholarship
Criteria: Senior interested in pursuing an insurance, risk management or actuarial science course of study at a Missouri college or university. Applicant must demonstrate scholarship consistent with capacity and circumstances. In addition to a typed application form, the applicant will submit a letter of application containing a brief explanation of career goals and biographical (background) information. The applicant will also submit one letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, administrator, or former employer, along with a high school transcript.

66. Missouri University of Science & Technology AEPi Freshman Scholarship
Criteria: Male senior planning to attend Mo S&T (Missouri University of Science & Technology) in Rolla and join AEPi Fraternity. Scholarships, ranging from $500 to up to $2,000, are based on first semester GPA at Mo S&T. Payout beginning in April 2011 based on fall, 2010 academic performance. 70. Black & White Ball Scholarship (Lindenwood University, St. Charles, MO)
Criteria: Senior planning to attend Lindenwood University. Candidates must meet the university admission requirements and demonstrate academic success and leadership potential. Candidates must complete the financial aid application and meet the “need criteria” established by the institution along with state and federal guidelines for designation of “need-based aid.” The Lindenwood University’s Black Student Union, Nelly, and Plaza Motors sponsor this scholarship.

71. Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) 2010 Award Program
Criteria: Senior. The SAMMY 2010 Award Program recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the contiguous United States. Students may nominate themselves. Teachers, coaches, principals, guidance counselors, athletic directors, parents or relatives may also nominate students. Judging of the nominees will be based on five criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic excellence (35%), leadership (15%), community service (10%), and milk experience (5%). 72. Joplin Athletic Booster Club Scholarship
Criteria: Seniors with parents who are Booster Club Members. Applicants must have participated in sports for at least two years and demonstrate sports, school and community leadership. Applicants must have a 2.5 grade point average and financial need. Applicants cannot have a Code of Conduct violation or excessive referrals.
Amount: Six $500.00 scholarships; in addition, the Joplin Athletic Booster Club will award two Jack Holden Scholarships in the amount of $750.00 each.

73. Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program
Criteria: Students age 6 through 18. An adult 21 years of age older may nominate a student who is doing great work to benefit their community. Parents may nominate their child. The student’s volunteer efforts must have occurred in the last year. Winners are chosen based on the project, benefits and outcome. Criteria: Senior planning to study Science, Art, Agriculture, Music, Education or Bible at a college or university in the fall of 2008. Applicants must attend an accredited college (2 or 4 year) within 75 miles of George Washington Carver National Monument, or attend Iowa State University, Tuskegee University, or Simpson College (Indianola, Iowa). Criteria: Senior planning to attend a four-year accredited university or college in the fall of 2010 and major in education or nursing. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. A 150-200 word typed essay based on the question, “What does the Spirit of Mercy mean to you?” is part of the application packet. Special consideration will be given to scholarship applicants who have a parent(s), grandparent(s), or adult sibling(s) employed by St. John’s Regional Medical Center or Joplin-based Mercy Clinics. The Scholarship was created in honor of the Sisters of Mercy who have faithfully served St. John’s and Joplin area schools.

Criteria: Senior meeting the definition of legal blindness and planning to enter college during the 2010-2011 school year.
