art classJoplin High School has a strong Visual Art Department offering a well-rounded choice of classes. Our art students have the opportunity to explore a variety of techniques in both 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional media. We offer two courses specifically for students intent on pursuing art beyond high school. Weekly open studio time is available to students after school (check with art teachers for specific times).

ART SURVEY  (1 Unit)

Skills and knowledge in the areas of drawing, ceramics, art history, design metals and fibers are expected to be gained by the learner in this introductory art class. Students must complete Art Survey before they are allowed to move into any other art courses, except Art Appreciation.

DRAWING & PAINTING I & DRAWING & PAINTING II  (1/2 Unit each)

A two-dimensional study in drawing, painting, and printmaking, with an emphasis on drawing.
Prerequisite: Art Survey

FIBERS & METALS I & FIBERS & METALS II  (1/2 Unit each)

A comprehensive study of crafts as a fine art. Metal-smithing techniques for the construction of jewelry and sculpture, handmade paper, fabric painting techniques, weaving and basketry techniques will be explored.
Prerequisite: Art Survey

THREE DIMENSIONAL DESIGN I & THREE DIMENSIONAL DESIGN II (1/2 Unit each)

Courses in pottery and sculpture in which students study and experience studio techniques; they learn about various materials and different glazing techniques.
Prerequisite: Art Survey

ART PORTFOLIO (1 Unit)

This course is intended for students preparing to pursue a career in visual art. Students will develop a functional portfolio for academic or professional purposes.
Prerequisite: Art Survey and at least four of the following classes: Drawing & Painting I, Drawing & Painting II, Fibers & Metals I, Fibers & Metals II, 3-D Design I, and 3-D Design II.

ART APPRECIATION (Dual Credit – 1 Unit)

This is a two-semester course for the college bound student. An art survey class that is designed to increase appreciation of the visual arts through reading, slide lectures, library research, and hands-on projects. Development of the cognitive and critical process as they relate to the visual arts is emphasized.
