Social Studies

Three units of social studies credit -- including American History and one semester of government -- are required for graduation from the Joplin School District for the class of 2010 and beyond. Currently for the class of 2007, 2008, and 2009, three and one-half units of science are required for graduation.

The Social Studies Department consists of twelve instructors. Course offerings consist of Advanced Contemporary Issues, Advanced World Geography, Advanced World Geography Enrichment, Advanced World History, American Government, American History, Civil War, Contemporary Issues, Contemporary World Affairs, Independent Enrichment, Psychology, and Sociology, Understanding the Law, We the People, World Geography, and World History. For the college bound student U.S. Government & Politics and United States History are offered as Advance Placement classes, and Advanced American History is offered as a Dual credit class.
