JHS Eagle Tennis
Eagle Pride runs high throughout the tennis program at Joplin High School. The girls’ season is in the fall with tryouts/practice starting the middle of August. The boys’ tennis season is in the spring, beginning in late February. Boys and girls, 9-12th grade, may try out for their respective team.
Team Camp and other activities are offered throughout the summer. Dates and times are determined in May and will be posted on the Summer Camps calendar link.
The Varsity Squad will consist of the top eight players that have successfully attended all try-out practices and competed in a team challenge tournament where each player is ranked according to his/her position on the challenge ladder. The rest of the players make up the Jr. Varsity squad and must have attended all try-outs and completed the challenge tournament. Challenge matches to move up or down the ladder occur throughout the season. Team uniforms and warm-ups will be issued, with players furnishing their own racquets and shoes.
Home matches are held at Schifferdecker Park at 7th and Schifferdecker. The season consists of 14 duals and 4 tournaments. We play all the teams in the Ozark Conference and travel to Springfield, Columbia, and Jefferson City for tournament play and other dual matches. The boys’ team hosts the Joplin Boys Invitational in April. It has grown each year in strength of teams and we hope to make it a Four State tournament to include teams from Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas.
The 2005 girl's team boasts the first Southwest Missouri Girl's State Singles Champion Melissa Hoffmeister. The 2008 boy's team boasts the first Joplin boy's state champion John Lazenby. State level play in both single and doubles, and team district honors have been obtained in the past and will continue to be a goal for each season.
